A community-driven grocery experience for Jumbo
Brief debrief
In 2017, we partnered with Jumbo to revolutionize their grocery shopping app. The vision was ambitious: transform the app from a simple product listing platform into a vibrant community hub. This meant reimagining grocery shopping as an experience of shared stories, recipes, and personal connections, rather than just a routine task.

My contribution involved developing a strategy to foster community engagement and leading a design sprint that focused on creating a visually appealing and user-validated experience.
Challenge & Approach
Jumbo’s main challenge was its limited online presence, primarily because their platform was just a showcase of grocery products, lacking variety in content. This not only impacted their visibility in search rankings but also limited user engagement. Our goal was twofold: enhance the app’s functionality and boost Jumbo’s digital presence through user-generated content. To tackle this, we adopted a design sprint methodology, enriched by data analytics and real-time user feedback via Usabilla. This approach enabled us to iterate rapidly and effectively, keeping user experience at the forefront of our innovations.
Solution & Impact
The design sprint led to the creation of a feature that redefined the shopping experience on Jumbo’s app. Users began to engage more deeply, creating and sharing personalized grocery lists that ranged from treasured family recipes like “Oma’s pasta” to festive collections like “Summer BBQ Essentials.” This initiative transformed the app into a space where users not only shopped but also shared and connected over common interests.
Moreover, the introduction of social tagging features further enhanced this experience. Users could now describe their lists accurately, making it easier for others to discover and adopt these shared recommendations. This not only increased user engagement but also enriched Jumbo’s digital content with authentic, community-driven contributions, thereby expanding their online presence and transforming their app into a lively community space.
